lives in Ronald, Washington, where elk graze in her backyard. She completed her MFA at Eastern Washington University, preparing for her thesis defense in Stehekin, where she worked as an NPS Interpretive Ranger for many seasons. Her poems have been published in Verse Daily, Hayden’s Ferry Review, West Branch, Many Mountains Moving, Willow Springs, Third Coast, Tupelo Quarterly, Los Angeles Review, Hubub, Elixir, Diner, and more. She also won the 2015 Orlando Prize for Poetry. Linda holds her time in Stehekin very dear. Hiking, backpacking and camping are truly inspiring and unique experiences to receive. So, I love to paint the sights after returning home so I can live with the memories every day. After retiring I started painting as a hobby. My sister Diane Paton Peel has been a great instructor and we often venture out together along with Bob, and share inspiration. Roxanne worked first as an architect and later spent several years as a National Park backcountry ranger, living and working months at a time in remote alpine environments. Her first trip to Stehekin was in 1986 while solo hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. She and her husband bought a log cabin in the Stehekin valley in 1991 where they now live for half of the year. Roxanne was selected as an artist in residence for several private arts organizations (US, Iceland, Australia, Greece) plus for four US National Parks. He learned to love painting visiting the Phillips Collection and the National Gallery of Art. Walker graduated from Harvard College and attended four years of art school culminating in an M.F.A. in painting from Columbia University. At Columbia he also studied printmaking with Seong Moy (woodblock) and Tony Harrison (etching). In the late 1970’s, Walker traveled around the country painting directly from major American archetypal landscape sites, monuments, and national parks. This work laid the foundation for much of his later work inspired by nature. Walker is married to dancer/choreographer Ellen Webb with whom he collaborated for many years. His work in dance led to years of drawing and painting from the human figure, especially the figure in movement. Walker has had multiple one person shows in galleries and museums. I tell everyone I did it backwards. I stayed two winters in a row then full time after that. Most folks get work in the summer with high hopes to stay longer. The beauty and remoteness of the place drew me in immediately. I grew up in New England with an adventurous and athletic family. We skied, sailed, hiked, explored the woods near our house, ice skated, played several school sports and spent many a vacation in quiet dramatic places, either in the mountains or on the ocean. To balance out the rigorous physical activity, I often stuck my hands into the art drawer in the kitchen. Mom kept a small collection of art supplies there for us to tinker with. Whether it be painting homemade holiday cards or knitting sweaters for my tiny teddy bears, I truly enjoyed the pleasures of creativity. My Mom taught me how to knit at an early age. My maternal grandfather painted watercolors and my paternal grandfather loved to photograph birds. Between the three of them I felt inspired in my youth to pursue a variety of artistic mediums. As a teen, I chronicled family outings on film. In college I experienced painting, sculpture, ceramics and drawing. Later, I took an adult education class on photography. When I moved to Stehekin and married, I studied photography with my husband and gained hands on experience in addition to talking with other photographers, and reading books. Today, I continue to remain physically active. This quirky invitation arrived on a postcard from Jonathan over forty years ago. I got a ride to the trailhead outside Marblemount and thirty three switchbacks later, huffing and puffing, I met him at the pass. We made our way down to Stehekin, stopping for the sock-popping view of Lake Chelan and Domke Mountain from the Rainbow Loop Trail. Later that year, we moved here. I have enjoyed being outside and drawing what I see for as long as I can remember. I like trying to catch the essence of a subject with the simplicity and spontaneity of brush drawing.
